MANSFIELD REGION BEEKEEPERS
HONEY SHOW SCHEDULE
Exhibits to be staged by 10am except for the Autumn Show when entries must be staged by 1.30pm. Entries to be completed at the time of entry and removed after 5.00pm.
CLASSES
- Two 454g jars of light honey
- Two 454g jars of medium honey
- Two 454g jars of dark honey
- Two 454g jars of granulated honey
- Two 454g jars of soft-set creamed honey
- Two 454g jars of heather or heather blend honey
- Two containers of cut comb approx. 227g
- One deep or shallow frame for extraction. Must not be granulated.
- Six 28g blocks of beeswax
- One bottle of mead, any type, in a standard clear 75cl glass bottle with a flanged stopper (of cork or plastic material)
- Honey cake. Exhibits must be made from this recipe:
225g self raising flour 175g honey 110g butter or margarine
175g sultanas 2 medium sized eggs pinch of salt
METHOD: Cream the butter and honey together well. Beat the egss and add them alternately with sifted flour and salt (save a little flour to add with the sultanas). Beat all well and lightly. A little milk may be added if necessary. Fold in the sultanas and stir well. Pre-heat oven to 180C/325F/Gasmark 4.
TO COOK: Prepare a tin approx. 12.8cm round, pour in the cake mixture and bake for approx. one and a quarter to one and a half hours depending on your oven.
- Honey dainties not exceeding 227g judged on novelty
- Honey preserves. One jar of jam or fruit preserved with honey. Jar to be labelled with contents
- Display relating to beekeeping. Base not exceeding 33cm x 46cm
- Photograph connected with beekeeping. Only one print per entry - minimum size of print 15cm x 10cm
- Beginners class - two matching jars of honey. Only open to beekeepers with not more than two years of keeping bees
RULES FOR ALL SHOWS
- No two or more persons may exhibit the produce of the same apiary in any class, other than in partnership.
- More than one exhibit may be entered in the same class by the same exhibitor but only one prize may be awarded to any exhibitor in any one class.
- All extracted honey must be in the Ministry of Agriculture squat 454g jars with standard matching lacquered screwtops. The stewards are empowered to transfer any exhibit considered wrongly graded to its proper class before judging commences.
- Cut comb must be in cut comb cases as for marketing. Frames must be in protective cases, no fancy edging, both sides to be visible. Wax must be cast by the exhitbitor. Mead must be in clear glass and corks must be removable without the use of a corkscrew.
- Cakes and confections must be covered with plain cellophane, easily removable by the judge.
- Enries must be marked solely with labels supplied by the show steward. For jars and bottles labels must be placed 2.5cm from the bottom, sections and frames in the top right hand corner, cakes and confections on the doily.
- The judge's decision is final.
- All reasonable care will be taken of the exhibits but the show committee will not be responsible in any circumstances for loss or damage sustained either to exhibits, exhibitors or their property.
- No exhibit may be removed or interfered with by the exhibitor or any other person during the show without the steward's permission.
- No entry fees are payable. Places will be rewarded by place cards. For members of the Association points will be awarded:
- First - 5 points
- Second - 4 points
- Third - 3 points
- Highly commended - 2 points
- Commended - 1 point
- Nominated shows are all those where the NBKA holds a honey show. They are namely:
- Moorgreen Show
- Collingham Show
- Autumn Honey Show
- Sutton-on-Trent Festival
Points are gained towards awards by taking scores gained at the Autumn Show and the highest score from one of the other shows.
